Summer 07 Rox!!!

June 26th, 2007, 10:58 am

Summer of 07 started off with quite the bang! Richie Hawtin on Thursday, June 6th @ Foundation Nightclub was one intense night! Minneapolis has been into the minimal techno world for years now, and they def celebrated the return of the minimal master in style. A packed club got down to Centrific playing a 1/2 live, 1/2 dj set. Magda took over after that, much to the thrill of the attendees. Richie took the decks at midnight, and proceeded to re-establish himself as the “man to beat” in the world of minimal. It was amazing to sit back and watch him in action, sampling & looping & tweaking & building & pretty much remixing on the fly with his Final Scratch and dj tools.

The next night Dj Icey was supposed to be at Foundation in Minneapolis. Unfortunately, major flight issues in New York stranded Icey on the runway for over 7 hours!!! We dropped the door cover to $5 and had Jack Trash (that’s me) and Jeff Hunter (breaks) fill in the missing time. Innovation also took a prime spot showcasing his diverse and energetic dj skills. The night turned out to be quite fun anyways, as they energy level rocked out all night long.

The next night the whole SIM crew headed to Milwaukee for Stellar Spark. We booked all of the headliners except for Dj Funk, and also had 7 of us djing the party as well. The event was held at The Rave in Milwaukee, a huge venue with a wide variety of rooms. SIM was in charge of the main stage, the secondary main stage, and the VIP stage upstairs. The night was pretty crazy, with 5 rooms of djs running music from 8 PM until 2 AM! Every style of electronic music imaginable graced some sound system throughout the night. The main stage featured Jack Trash, Magda, and Richie Hawtin. Most of the night was Magda & Richie, with deep and beatin’ minimal techno flowin through the speakers. In the secondary main room Nathan Vox took Icey’s slot (STILL stuck in New York) and threw down a sweet set. The breakdancers in the house got it movin’ throughout his set. Dj Funk got on the decks and went crazy in his typical hyperactive, energetic style. Crazy booty dancers on stage, ghetto beats, and Funk yellin’ in th mic throughout. Always fun watching him party! Donald Glaude took the main slot of the night on this stage, and he def proved why. He immediately got into the groove with his intense eyes, jumping antics, and rockin’ djs tricks. Donald blew it up! The SIM go-go dancers got in the mix as well, and the whole room was enjoying the vibe.

A big shout out to everyone who came out and supported any of these events at the beginning of the summer! Tons of fun!

July 6th is coming, and that means BAD BOY BILL! SIM is proud to join with Spin Nightclub in downtown Minneapolis to present BAD BOY BILL! You know it is gonna get hot and sweaty on this night, and the beautiful people will be out in style ready to dance hard!

August 17-19 SIM presents a focus tent at Future Perfect, and outdoor camping festival in Wisconsin. Located about 2 hours from the Twin Cities, this event will feature over 5 stages/tents of djs, with full camping facilitiies and a ton of people ready to party for the weekend!

Not enough???

Jeff Mills afterthoughts… OMG!!!

April 28th, 2007, 7:46 pm

Wow, what an intense night Thursday was with Jeff Mills in town (yes, he made it). His flght was over 5 hours late, which made for quite the interested (and very stressfuly night) for me. He did fly in around 12:15 AM, and we brought him straight to the club, where he then threw down an absolutely INTENSE 1.5 hr set… I have not seen him play since about 1993, and this set was beyond inspiring and motivating. I know some folks were texting their friends saying Mills was not going to make it… to those of you who did not come out, for shame. Jeff’s set consisted of 3 turntables, 2 cdjs, a 909, and probably the most forward thinking musical mind in techno EVER! I was only able to watch the last 20 minutes of the set, but what I witnessed was mind-blowing (to say the least). He had at least 2 tracks going at all times, and often 3 to 4 dropping in and out and a mind-numbing pace. Remixing tracks on the fly by bringing in certain frequencies from various tracks. The highlight by far, however, was his last 6-8 minutes using the 909 drum machine. He played that thing like Jimi Hendrix played the guitar. I have never seen any electronic performer know and use any kind of instrument the way Mills did that 909. He knew that machine inside and out, and used every ounce he could pry from it. Words can in no way describe what I saw him do with that machine. Next time we bring him to town we have to put a camera on him and project it, just so people can watch what he does.

Everyone kept asking me what he was like… Jeff is very mello and quiet, but about as nice as an be. He was very happy to have made it into town, and enjoyed the time he had playing at Foundation.

I was a bit bummed more people were not out, but the crowd that was there was rocking and ‘avin it! Thanks to all of you who came out and supported! Richie Hawtin, Dj Icey, and Stellar Spark coming up soon, and PVD in 2 weeks! See y’all out soon :)
